The historical epicenter of Javanese art and culture, Jogya (as the locals call it) is a 50-minute flight southeast of Jakarta and an hour's drive from the massive 9th century Buddhist temple - Borobudur. Town is filled with galleries and troves of 200 year old Islamic texts, Javanese jewels in the Sonobudoyo Museum and Pasar Beringharjo market where piles of handmade batik, a Javanese textile are found.
Overlooking the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Borobudur is Amanjiwo, named "peaceful soul" for the serenity and beauty, the Ed Tuttle-designed resort lies at the foot of the Menoreh Hills, cascading gracefully from a lofty rotunda down the hillside to a magnificent swimming pool.
